Be the Blessing

blessing

The holiday season is my absolute favorite time of the year. If you know me at all, you know that I am ready to start celebrating Christmas in October!

This year, I took a few moments to reflect on why it is always such an anticipated time. There is of course the most important reason, the birth of our precious Savior. Just as I adore celebrating the birthdays of my best friends, I truly adore celebrating the birth of the Best Friend of my soul. It is a month long celebration of the sweetest relationship in my life!

However, there is another reason I love this time of year so deeply. It is a short period of time in which everyone is just a little bit happier. Maybe it is just me, but there is a beauty in the air in December. Everyone is more enticed to give to others, to love more, to smile a bit more frequently. We begin to think of those who are less fortunate than us and seek ways to help our neighbor.

Is it a coincidence that the season of giving comes right after the season of thanks? No, not at all. We spend November being constantly reminded to be thankful and to express that thanks as often as we can. This year, I spent Thanksgiving with my boyfriend’s family and we all shared one thing we were most grateful for this past year. It was so touching to hear everyone’s stories and testimonies of thanks for what has been a difficult year for most.

Let’s use the momentum of what we are most thankful this year and propel it into action. Are you most thankful for your family? Then consider inviting someone who does not have a family to spend Christmas with over to spend it with yours. Are you most thankful for your job? Then consider sponsoring a family who may be struggling financially. Maybe, like me, you are just thankful for hope. Then do the very best that you can to spread hope, joy, peace and love to everyone around you. That can be something as simple as smiling at a stranger as you pass them on the street. Or being a little extra kind to the cashier working so hard during this season.

The truth is, we ALL have something to give. This season, we celebrate the greatest gift of all, the birth of Jesus Christ. Let that inspire us to to live a life of gratitude and service to one another. Let us be blessings to those around us.

“Three things will last forever—faith, hope, and love—and the greatest of these is love.” 1 Corinthians 13:13 NLT

“For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. The government will rest on his shoulders. And he will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” Isaiah 9:6 NLT
