Fear is created through what you imagine; it is not reality until you bring it to life.

Fear is a perception from our minds that we have believed is real. Fear is created by what we choose to trust.

Looking back at my childhood, I remember watching my parents’ friends raising their kids differently than the way my parents raised me. Obviously I was jealous of the friends who were allowed to have more candy and snacks than I was! But I also remember the parents who were very protective and fearful. They tried to keep their kids from getting hurt in just about any way you could imagine. Almost everything was dangerous in their eyes. (Not that there is anything wrong with being protective of your kids!)

One example of this in my childhood was the trampoline. I grew up with 3 younger brothers; and for lack of a better word, we raged on that trampoline until it broke, then we got another one, and we got 3 more after that. Anyway, my brothers and I would invite our friends over to jump around for hours with 4+ people on it at the same time.

I remember that some family friends would come over from time to time. Without hesitation; we would invite the kids in this family out to the trampoline! However, something was different with them. They were not allowed on the trampoline with more than 1 person at a time. Whenever one of them was on it; even alone, they were very scared and cautious. If someone else ever got on the trampoline at the same time as them, they would quickly get off because they were so scared that they would get hurt.

The reason people have fear in their lives is because at some point they had a negative encounter, or were told that they needed to fear a certain thing. Looking back at the trampoline example; I got on it with many other kids and never had any fear and never really got hurt. But other kids were so scared of it that they could hardly loosen up and enjoy it as the rest of us did.

Is there something that you have felt called to do, or wanted to do, that you have let fear keep you from doing? Maybe it is fear of failure or fear of change that is keeping you from moving forward. (I know that this kind of fear has held me back in my past.) Much like the trampoline, the fear that we have was created through a bad experience or through what someone else has told us.

As believers, we are called to be in this world, but not part of it. We are called to live differently; we walk by faith, not by sight. The bible says in 2 Timothy 1:7 “For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.” We all have things in our lives that we have wanted to do, but we have allowed fear to hold us back. Let’s decide together to remove the bondage that fear brings and begin living by what the word of God says! Let’s decide today as follows of Christ to not allow fear to keep us from our hearts desires any longer!

Joshua 1:9 says “Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Today, let’s just go for it! Let’s no longer let fear hold us back from the future that we desire to have. Remember, fear is fake but what it can keep us from achieving is real. Choose life over fear today!
