I was riding in the car the other day with some friends and we passed a high school who’s mascot was the “Fighting Christians.” One of my friends said something along the lines of, isn’t that sending the wrong message, its kind of an oxymoron.
I politely let him know that I disagreed with his point, and think its something that has kind of become assumed over the years. Christians are “lovers not fighters.” Yes, part of being a follower of Christ is love, but if our goal is the live a life as Jesus lived (1 John 2:6) then we are NOT called to just lay down…we are called to fight for what we believe in. Jesus was very much a fighter.
Now when you think about a fighter you think of violence. You think of hand to hand combat or someone getting hurt as a result. Jesus fought by standing up for what He knew to be right and not backing down. Just think if Jesus would have backed down everytime there was opposition to Him…the entire New Testament would pretty much be completely different.
What followers of Christ need to understand is that there WILL be opposition, and that we ARE allowed to fight for our beliefs. I believe God would encourage us to defend Him. But the way we do that is through love, and through the Word of God.
Look at how Jesus fought Satan in the desert. (Matthew 4:1-11)
There are many verses that tell us not to retaliate or “turn the other cheek.” But that doesn’t meant that we should be followers of Jesus that become “doormats” and allow people to walk all over us. We should be so full of love, joy and peace that those are our greatest weapons against any opposition we may come across. And trust me those weapons are much more powerful than you believe.
Don’t be deceived, we are in a battle everyday and as a result we need to be armed with weapons to combat it. Don’t let the world around you determine how you feel and believe, stand up and fight for what you believe in, fight for Jesus.
