If you really think about this statement, it should be very humbling. It truly doesn’t matter what you have done. For me this used to be difficult to understand, as I am a person who has always lived a “good life” I’ve not done much wrong or that I regret… Good works are not what make you holy. Your holiness can not be earned. It was given to you by God through what Jesus did.
Holy: Exalted or worthy of complete devotion as one perfect in goodness and righteousness. (Merriam definition)
1 Peter 1:15-16
But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do… “Be holy, because I am holy.”
As believes we are called to work out this holiness through our pursuit to be like Christ. Once we understand that there is nothing we can do to earn our holiness; then we can begin to operate and walk in it. That is the example that Jesus shows us through the gospels. As Jesus is, so are we in this world. (1 John 4:17)
No matter what your past has been, know that today you can begin to walk in this holiness. Jesus made this possible for each of us to be able to do. I encourage you to hold yourself to a higher standard, not to look down on others, but to help them to get where you are at.
