Happiness is something that everyone wants more of in their lives. People that are happy appear to be the people that are enjoying life the most. But did you know that there are also some serious health benefits to being happy? Recent studies by the makers of Happify explain that people who consider themselves happy have the following:
- A lower heart rate
- Lower levels of stress hormones
- Lower concentrations of a plasma associated with heart disease
- Run a lower risk of getting sick
- A longer life span
Happiness is something that the human race longs for, not just for the sake of being happy, but also because it benefits the overall health of the body! If you’re like me, than the first thing you are asking is this: “Great! Where do I get started to gain more happiness?” The thing about happiness is that there is no 30 day program or 3 step plan to obtaining it…
Thankfulness is the beginning of happiness.
Happiness doesn’t come from having a great job or owning a successful business and it doesn’t come from being debt free or extremely wealthy. Happiness is a mindset. The key to beginning to live a happier life is to get into a mindset of happiness. The best way to start shifting your mindset is by being thankful. Being thankful isn’t always easy; but if you can remember it in your daily life, you can start becoming a happier person. Walking in thankfulness begins with the simple things. Here are three key points on growing into a thankful mindset:
1. Say thank you and mean it
With a smile on your face and speaking from the heart, tell people thank you; even when it is something small! Saying these words opens our minds to a different perspective. When you tell people thank you, mean it! We cannot just say these words out of habit. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 tells us to give thanks in all circumstances. No matter what our circumstances are, let’s remember to thank the people around us for what they do.
2. Don’t feel entitled
This is one of the biggest issues that people face today. We walk around feeling entitled to the things we want and the freedoms that we have. We need to remind ourselves that we are only in freedom and that we only have the things we have because someone else paved the way. Entitled people aren’t thankful because they feel that they deserve what they have and (or) what they do not have. Entitled people are bitter, and not walking in happiness. At the end of the day, entitlement comes from a spirit of pride. The bible says that God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble. (James 4:6) I don’t know about you, but I think that grace sounds much better to be living in!
3. You’re free
At the end of the day, if you feel like you have nothing at all to be thankful for, remember this: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” – John 3:16. If I was not in a relationship with God and did not understand what this verse means for my life, being a happy person walking in thankfulness would be a whole lot harder for me. Being in relationship with God and being reminded of what He has done for me, brings more thankfulness and more happiness than anything else in this world ever could.
On this Thanksgiving Day, I encourage you to start your journey toward becoming a happier person; start today with being thankful…
