Would Jesus Vote in this Presidential Election? And Should I?

Would Jesus Vote

Would Jesus vote? Due to the upcoming presidential election this is a very popular question right now! This question came to my mind after reading a post on this blog last week titled A Christian’s Perspective On The Presidential Election

I was in a conversation with a friend recently and we were discussing this. ‘If Jesus was a citizen of the USA, would He vote?’ This friend I was talking with is the co-host of a quickly growing political podcast. He is highly influential, so I really wanted to hear his opinion on the question.

We talked about why Jesus would vote, and also why He would not vote. At the end of the conversation, I came up with my decision that I believe YES Jesus would vote if He was a citizen of the USA in today’s world.

Why do I believe this?

I believe that He would vote based on how He followed the rules and laws of his time. One of my main scripture references is Matthew 22:15-22 Jesus says “Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s” – He said this in regards to the imperial tax of that time. This tax had nothing to do with His ministry, yet Jesus followed the laws placed by the governing authorities. Romans 13:1 says “Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.” (However, it is fully up to us to decide who these leaders are.)

Should Americans Vote?

I have a very popular post on this blog titled ‘Remember Your Freedom‘. I strongly encourage you to read it. One of my main points was this: ‘The freedom you live in today once cost someone their life. They believed that their death was worth your freedom.‘ The USA was founded on Christian principles. This country and its political foundation are based on God’s word. Ultimately the ability to vote came from God. It is our duty as believers and as US citizens to vote. That is our freedom as Americans and you 100% should and need to vote.

Should Christians Vote?

In regards to voting from a biblical perspective; a wise mentor of mine brought Genesis 1:28 to my attention. “God said to them, “Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea, the birds in the air, and every creature that crawls on the earth.”” Notice that this verse is full of action words. God is in control, yet He has given humanity management over the earth. It is our job to steward it well.

The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.

In the Old Testament, Joshua didn’t take possession of the Promised Land by sitting on the side lines and waiting for God to place the land in front of him. God did tell Joshua that the land belonged to him and his people, however, Joshua had to take it; not just sit and wait for something to happen.

Would Jesus vote in this presidential election? And should I? Yes and Yes! I believe that Jesus would vote, and that it is fully our duty and responsibility both as Christian’s and as American’s to vote as well. I write this post humbly and my prayer is that it encourages someone out there to vote!

In ending this post, I want to pass you over to a page that we’ve set up here on DailyPS: ‘How Christians Should Navigate the 2020 Election‘ I trust that it will serve you well during this political time that we’re living in!

Question from Alex Sanfilippo, the author.

  1. Thanks Alex. Great post! Politicians play to groups of people. When we choose not to vote we eliminate our voice. Our voice should be the loudest. Our values and beliefs can only be protected by our influence as we pray. Faith without action is dead.

  5. Thank you for your article that is so relevant today. Actually, your message is classic and since our Jesus’s message will not change or be updated until He comes again! I’m Catholic and unfortunately I know many who have twisted our faith doctrine to try to justify their vote for one side or the other in this election. However, if Christians follow Jesus who IS the Truth, the Way, and the Life, it will lead them not only to the polls, but to everlasting salvation. Btw I love your image above and used it for my blog (with citation of course). I hope that’s ok. Thanks again.

    1. Enjoy using the image, it’s all yours! 🙂

Thanks for this comment, I’m glad to read that we’re on the same page.

  6. Interesting Article, I’m curious to know your opinion… Would not those verses point to more or less the laws of the land rather than “duty” as a citizen of the land. Meaning, isn’t Jesus saying if it is law and does not break God’s law then abide by the Law of the land for this is right? However, is it right to elect candidates that you know for a fact are going to trample on God’s Law. If you know they will not uphold it or put it first? Considering that it is not law to vote, isn’t it understood that there will become a time where God’s people will need to be separate. Is voting for one or the other not in support of the lesser of two evils? Is it a time for us to understand that prophecy is being fulfilled, God is in control and no matter who is elected the prophecies of Revelation will come to pass, as this is the will of God. Is it not time to recognize the signs of the last day events and instead of drawing closer into the politics of the world, focus on getting our hearts and houses in order, preparing for the inevitable changes that are upon us that our God warns us about. I am not saying this is right, and normally I completely support voting however, I’d just like to know your opinion as clearly both Trump and Hilary are evil and mad and care nothing for God and barely the people. It seems as that time might be upon us.
